Western Cape Department of Health vacancies are posted officially at westerncape.gov.za/health-jobs, which opens the department's online recruitment portal. The department's full name is now the Western Cape Department of Health and Wellness. Every post there has a reference number and a closing date and time, and you apply online on that portal, free: each advert says no payment of any kind is required. A Facebook post that copies an advert is not an application. City of Cape Town clinics are a different employer, with their own careers portal. We checked the portal and the adverts on 27 October 2026. The listings further down this page come from Cape Town Jobs: they're healthcare jobs from private and public employers, and most of them aren't Department of Health posts.
Updated:
Type westerncape.gov.za/health-jobs and you land on the department's recruitment site, which runs on its own platform (scubedonline.co.za), apart from the rest of the Western Cape Government. It lists every open post with the facility and the closing date. The Province's general e-recruitment portal has a "Health jobs" button that sends you to the same site, and Health isn't in that portal's own department list, so don't look for nursing posts there.
On 27 October 2026 the Health site listed 70 posts over four pages, all closing on 30 October or 9 November 2026. The adverts we opened had gone up on 16 and 23 October and closed at 5pm, so a post can be open for barely two weeks. Most were in Cape Town: at Groote Schuur, Tygerberg and Red Cross, or under "Chief Directorate: Metro Health Services", which covers the metro's other hospitals and clinics. The rest were in the West Coast, Cape Winelands, Overberg and Garden Route districts.
The DPSA's weekly Public Service Vacancy Circular carries the same adverts: Circular 38 of 2026, dated 23 October, had them in Annexure AA and told applicants to apply online via westerncape.gov.za/health-jobs. Use the circular to spot posts, and apply on the portal. We found no job-alert sign-up on the portal, so set yourself a weekly reminder to check it.
Public servants declared in excess get preference for these posts. Each advert gives an annual salary range plus a 13th cheque, pension contribution and housing and medical aid allowances; our guide to public service salary levels explains the grades, and our Western Cape Government jobs guide covers the wider provincial process.
Use "Sign In / Register" at the top of the vacancy list. After you've registered, the same login gives you Application History, Update My Info and Manage My Account, so keep your CV current there. For login or upload problems, the portal's Support button is staffed Monday to Friday, 8:00 to 17:00, and the Western Cape Government's how-to-apply page gives 012 667 4886 (weekdays, 8am to 4pm) as the technical help line for Health applications. Questions about the job go to the person under "Enquiries" on the advert.
Section 31 of the Nursing Act, 2005 makes registration with the South African Nursing Council a condition of practising, and the adverts name the exact category: the Staff Nurse post we read asked for SANC registration as a Staff Nurse, the Professional Nurse posts for registration as a Professional Nurse.
Read the grade line before you apply. On the Staff Nurse and Professional Nurse adverts we checked, Grade 1 needed no experience after registration, Grade 2 at least 10 years and Grade 3 at least 20. A primary health care post in Riversdale also wanted a driver's licence, because the nurse drives a mobile clinic.
Newly qualified nurses can apply before their registration comes through, as long as they hand in proof of applying to the council and of paying its fee on or before the interview day; the adverts limit this to first-time registrants and people changing registration status. Each advert prints its own salary range; for how nursing pay compares across public and private hospitals, see our healthcare salary guide.
Pharmacist's assistant posts work the same way through the South African Pharmacy Council: the Mitchells Plain advert open on 27 October 2026 required registration as a Pharmacist Assistant (Post-Basic).
On 27 October 2026 the portal had no cleaner, porter or general worker posts open. When they come up they'll be on the same site with the same kind of reference number, so a "general worker" post on a blog or WhatsApp group is only real if you can find it there. The nearest support posts that day:
Admin clerk posts come up across the metro hospitals in finance, supply chain, admissions, medical records and transport. The one we opened asked for a Senior Certificate or equivalent plus relevant experience, and warned of a possible practical test. With matric and office experience but no health qualification, these are the posts to watch.
Community health workers in the Western Cape aren't on department posts. The department told Health-e News in February 2026 that non-profit organisations it partners with recruit and employ them, and the article names Philani Nutrition Centre and TB HIV Care among them. Those jobs come through the NPOs, not the Health portal. Caregiver jobs in home-based and frail care are mostly private, and those are the ones on our healthcare jobs board.
Two governments run health care in Cape Town. The Province's Department of Health and Wellness runs the hospitals, from Groote Schuur to Khayelitsha District Hospital. The City of Cape Town has its own clinics, and its clinics page says some are now managed by Western Cape Government Health, in the same buildings. So go by the employer named on the advert, not the building.
The City's "Apply for a job" page says applications are free: you register for e-Services, activate the Careers service and build an online CV before searching its openings. The same page warns that e-Services doesn't fully work on a phone or tablet, so use a laptop or desktop if you can, and it describes an offline route too. Our guide to City of Cape Town jobs walks through it.
| Employer | Where posts appear | How you apply |
|---|---|---|
| Western Cape Department of Health and Wellness | westerncape.gov.za/health-jobs; also the DPSA circular, Western Cape annexure | Online on the Health portal; emailed CVs aren't accepted |
| Other Western Cape Government departments | The Province's e-recruitment portal (Education has its own lists) | Online profile and application on that portal |
| City of Cape Town | The City's job search on capetown.gov.za | e-Services account, Careers service and an online CV |
| National departments, including the national Department of Health | The DPSA's weekly Public Service Vacancy Circular | Z83 and CV to the advertising department, quoting the reference number |
For the other public employers in the city, see our guide to government jobs in Cape Town.
Groote Schuur in Observatory and Tygerberg in Parow Valley had the most adverts on 27 October 2026, from registrars to boiler operators, and Red Cross War Memorial Children's Hospital in Rondebosch had posts open too.
Under Metro Health Services the adverts named Karl Bremer Hospital in Bellville, Victoria Hospital in Wynberg, New Somerset Hospital in Green Point, Mitchells Plain Hospital, Khayelitsha District Hospital, Wesfleur Hospital in Atlantis, Mowbray Maternity Hospital, Valkenberg and Stikland (psychiatry), Alexandra Hospital, Brackengate Transitional Care Facility and the Bishop Lavis community day centre. Emergency Medical Services, the Western Cape College of Nursing's Stikland campus, head office in Cape Town and the Western Cape Health Warehouse had posts too.
Check the location line before you apply. Some posts are in Riversdale, Moorreesburg or Ladismith, a long way from a Cape Flats taxi route, and the Staff Nurse advert we read said appointees will be expected to work across the institutions linked to their facility when needed.
Every advert on the portal says no payment of any kind is required when applying. Anyone who wants money to process your application or hold a post isn't the department, whatever logo is on the message. Nor is anyone asking you to email your CV and ID to a Gmail address: the portal doesn't accept emailed CVs as applications.
Facebook posts are where many people first see these jobs. Treat one as a tip-off at best: find the reference number on the Health portal, check the closing date and apply there, and if the post isn't on the portal, leave it. Our guide on how to spot job scams covers the other patterns, and the scam warning page explains how to report one.
Check the Health portal for this week's posts. If a private hospital, clinic or care agency would suit you too, browse the healthcare jobs on Cape Town Jobs.
On the department's online recruitment portal at westerncape.gov.za/health-jobs, which lists each post with its facility and closing date (checked 27 October 2026). The same adverts appear in the DPSA's weekly Public Service Vacancy Circular under the Western Cape annexure, but the circular sends you back to the portal to apply. Job boards and Facebook pages only copy them.
Go to westerncape.gov.za/health-jobs and use Sign In / Register at the top of the vacancy list. First-time applicants register; after that the same login gives you Application History, Update My Info and Manage My Account. For technical problems the portal has a Support button, staffed Monday to Friday from 8:00 to 17:00 (checked 27 October 2026).
Not for the online application itself, going by the official pages. You apply through the form on the Health portal, which says emailed CVs aren't accepted. The Western Cape Government's how-to-apply page says shortlisted candidates complete a Z83 and supply certified copies of their ID and qualifications. The DPSA's current Z83 has applied since 1 January 2021 (both checked 27 October 2026).
No. The City of Cape Town is the municipality and recruits through its own careers system: you register for e-Services, activate the Careers service and build an online CV. The Province's Department of Health and Wellness runs the hospitals and recruits on its own portal. The City says some of its clinics are now managed by Western Cape Government Health, so go by the employer named on the advert.
No. Every advert on the department's portal states that no payment of any kind is required when applying, and the City of Cape Town says applications to the City are free as well. Anyone asking for a registration fee, a placement fee or money to secure a post is not the department, so don't pay and apply directly on the portal.
